March 2007 Trip - Please help and sponsor a child. Donation details here.

March 12, 2007  We just returned from a mission to Guatemala where we held clinics in some of the more remote areas.  One clinic was in Todos Santos, another in Comanticillo, and the last big clinic was held in Coban.  As always, when we are in Guatemala, there are always patients being seen at the office.  From these clinics, we now have about 150 patients waiting for surgery.  A longer report on the team will follow later.

We have a surgical team going to Guatemala in June 2008, and we need help for some of the patients who can not afford to make the trip to where the surgery team will be operating.

Some of these patients need sponsors, because they will have to have testing, X-rays, scans, etc. that they simply can not afford.  A few of them need to come stateside and to do that will need sponsors to help defray some of the costs, such as passport, visa application, photos, and some clothing for the trip.  I only ask for help when we know for sure that the patient's family is truly indigent.

Here are some photos of children who need to come to the US for medical treatment:
(Click on the photo for a larger image.)

At the present time, we believe that $250 per child is what is needed for the following three patients to come to the US for treatment.  Some will need more testing before they travel also. Please help and sponsor a child. Donation details here.
13 year old girl The first picture is of a 13 year old girl who was hit by a car a year ago.  She actually had a broken back, and needs surgery as soon as possible in order to prevent her from becoming a paraplegic.  It is a miracle that she is still walking at all.  Time is of the essence for this child.
boy who was burned The second picture is of a boy who was burned last September and is in need of some serious reconstructive work.  He has trouble moving his head at this time because of the constriction of the scars.

These two pictures are of a young girl with burns to her feet.  She has trouble walking because of the scar constrictures.
Below are some of the patients that we screened on this last mission trip.  They are all scheduled to have surgery in Coban with our surgical team in April. There are many more not shown here.
scheduled to have surgery

To make the trip from the remote areas will cost about $50 per patient for these patients and one parent to travel.  We have food for them when they arrive and can take care of that part of it.  We are also providing all medications and supplies for the surgeries. Please help and sponsor a child. Donation details here.

Young girl needs to have her finger fixed. This young girl came to the clinic because she needs to have her finger fixed. She has a burn scar that is keeping her finger in a flexed position. It quickly became apparent that this is quite a handicapping problem for her...you need both hands open and flat in order to make tortillas, the staple bread of the area. She needs a sponsor for her surgery next month.
A mother and daughter at clinic A mother and daughter at clinic. This child needs a sponsor so that she can have her cleft palate fixed. She will eventually have more surgeries on her nose and mouth also.
