SUMMER 2008 Student Program:

Click for a larger image.MEDICAL STUDENT PROGRAM/UNIVERSITY STUDENT/HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT PROGRAM: Each year in June or July, we take a team of medical students, university students and interested high school students for a two week program in Guatemala. During this time, the students take part in observing surgeries, follow some of our local physicians around and help in clinics screening patients for upcoming medical teams. The medical students have a more medically intensive program.

You may use any airline or travel service to get to Guatemala. If you want to travel with a group of students, contact the KY office to get information. Adjustments can be made on travel dates if needed, i.e. you may travel to Guatemala earlier or stay later.

The program's initial cost is $150 which covers in country transportation during the team dates, and entry fees to some tourist sites. The costs to stay at the office during your time in Guatemala is $12 per day, which includes two meals per day. When the team is too far from the office to return at night (usually about 3 or 4 nights during the program) you will be expected to pay your hotel costs. We search for places to stay that are relatively safe and not too expensive. Any food costs or tour costs outside of those provided by the program are your responsibility.

Jessica and Dianna were summer 2006 teen volunteers. We welcome students in all areas to join us. This program is of particular value to students studying Spanish language, medicine, nursing, social work, speech therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, and other medical field programs.

The physicians that work with the summer medical teams are Dr. Ramon Vivar (Neurosurgeon), Dr. Ernesto Cofino (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) and Dr. Luis Garcia (Orthopedic Surgery). We also have a Pediatrics specialist and as well as Obstretics/Gynecology doctors.

At the end of the team, we will travel to the Peten Jungle area, where we will have a screening clinic and you will have time to visit the Mayan ruins of Tikal and Yaxha. One night will be spent on the Rio Dulce.

If you have questions, please contact me at ChildrensAidMissions@gmail.com. In the Subject line put "Student Team 2008". Please understand that there are a limited number of students that we can take on a team, and this usually fills up quickly.

We also need a couple of adult volunteers to travel with this team each year.

Regretfully, the 2008 Summer Medical Team trip is now full. Please consider volunteering with us on another medical trip or submit your applications for the Medical Student 2009 trip early!

The administrative fee of $150 is due within two weeks of your acceptance on the team and is non-refundable. Fees for housing are due upon arrival in Guatemala and will need to be paid in cash. You may pay them earlier by check so long as it arrives at the Bowling Green office by May 15.
