VOLUNTEER NOW!
Our volunteers are the backbone of our organization. There is something that everyone can do to help the CAMI program. If you are interested, please complete our volunteer application online and we will get in touch with you.
Ways to volunteer: In the United States: Work in the office in Bowling Green, KY answering the telephone, sorting and cataloguing medical supplies and equipment for shipment abroad, pick up supplies from organizations or individuals, provide social services to our host (foster) families, provide translation services when needed, be a host family, provide marketing services, help keep the web page up to date, answer mail, etc. You can also: Set up a chapter of CAMI in your area, provide fund raising services, recruit host families, medical team volunteers, and hospitals to provide free services to children in need.
Medical/Surgical Team Volunteers: We are always in need of volunteers to travel abroad with out medical teams. You do not have to be in the medical profession to travel, and you do not have to speak Spanish. While we seriously need people with those qualifications, we also need you to rock babies prior to surgery, help in the pre-op area, help move supplies and equipment to where they are needed, drive, bathe children prior to surgery, spend time with the families while their child is in the operating room, help cook for the team members.
Medical Team professional volunteers: We need every specialty and area. Our hope is to provide quality medical services, even though the conditions where we are working are much less than optimal. Our medical teams have included medical students, residents, physicans, CRNAs, surgical specialists, pharmacists, nurses, CNAs, speech therapists, physical therapists, social workers, and orthotics and prosthetic specialists. Each team also needs Spanish language translators. All volunteers under 18 years of age are expected to stay at the office at night when we are close enough, and at designated hotels the rest of the time.
Our Expectations of our Volunteers: We expect all our volunteers to respect the people and customs of any country where we are traveling. You will be given country-specific information prior to travel. Please abide by all CAMI program rules at all times. Final decisions as to whether a surgical procedure will take place are made by the local physician in charge of the team in conjunction with the Executive Director and visiting surgeon.
